The following is the short recollection of how I was a first responder on the night of May 8th.
The time is around 0200 and I was driving north back to my home. It had just rained and the roads were slick. I was about 30 minutes away from base and driving towards a main road.
The roads are quiet. Traffic is sparse.
I approached an intersection, the light just turned red so I start to slow down as a minivan speeds by on my right.
Something felt wrong as I saw them speeding towards the intersection and I saw a truck. The van turning left slammed full speed into the driver side of the truck.
I was stopped at the intersection with my window rolled down listening and watching the scene unfold.
I couldn't believe what I was witnessing.
Sparks flew everywhere and sounds of glass shattering was all I heard as the van crashed into a pole.
Nobody else was around.
I sat for a few seconds looking around not sure what to do but instead sprung into action. I'm Red Cross certified first aid/CPR and figured I could be of assistance if someone was seriously injured. So I drove over to the accident making sure not to drive over debris. I stopped, put my caution lights on and got out to assess the scene.
All was eerily quiet (is this good or bad I thought)... except a baby was crying. There was smoke everywhere.
I got my phone out to dial 911 and quickly saw two other people show up. Someone was already calling 911, it was the third person who I didn't know was involved in the crash. The front part of his car had got hit.
A lady went over to the van and checked on the vehicles occupants.

Me and another guy checked on the truck and the saw the driver was fine (just shaken up). The engine block was leaking fluids (didn't smell like gasoline) but still we had to get him out quickly. His door was crunched in so he got out the back doors broken window.
Sirens could be heard getting closer at this point.
I walked over to the van. There was debris all over the ground. The driver in the van was out pacing around, holding her baby trying to comfort the little one.
The passenger of the van had blood on her face and was sitting quietly with glass on her lap. She had a stunned look on her face so we had her sit still. The police arrived and set up the perimeter. Soon thereafter the EMS came to get the passenger. They put her on a stretcher and into the back of the ambulance.
Overall, I'm happy nobody was majorly hurt or killed that night.
