PERSONAL TRAINING
There are so many questions that come up when a person starts working out for the first time...
'How many reps do I need to do? How many sets? What exercises do I need to do? How do I lose fat and get shredded? How much protein do I need?'
Okay, so you may be unexperienced with exercising wondering where to go for knowledge. You want to make sure your efforts are in accordance with your goals? We've all been there before... we were all beginners at something at one point. Full of questions and little idea of what to do. Our perceptions we're narrow.
I remember my first time picking up a weight...
...late one night, all by myself. I did nothing but bicep dumbbell curls with my plastic concrete weight set. I didn't know what I was doing or why but something clicked inside me after about 10 minutes of curling. That one thing that kept me going was the burn, also called pump. The pump is a feeling of tightness in the exercised muscle; it's also a visual experience. You see size a increase from blood being pushed into the muscle and it kept me curling. I equated pain with growth. I still have that mindset to this day which is reinforced by bodybuilding doctrine passed down through generations. Also, I'm more knowledgeable about other techniques that foster growth such as drop sets, super sets, negatives. I've learned all this through reading books, magazines, other trainers, and practicing it myself. This was before the internet was most people's choice. All that existed online for me was Bodybuilding.com. I miss them days... back when I first started working out. Back when I lived with my parents and had all I needed for a workout in my basement. I started back in 2006. Maybe even earlier but around that time I remember getting more serious and more consistent.
Fast forward 10 years...
...I am still 'pumping iron'. I intrinsically enjoy it and believe in the benefits of working out. It's kept me strong through some of my darkest times. My primary goal has changed though. There was a period of time (about a year) when I had a powerlifters mindset with a vision for a bodybuilder physique. My diet was dirty and all I was about was building mass. I achieved it but I wasn't healthy. Something inside me told me it was wrong and for as long as I could remember I was always health conscious (e.g. no smoking, no drinking). Also my build and metabolism weren't really working in my favor. This isn't to discourage anyone from going that route but I decided it wasn't for me. Basically, I want to give meaning to all my working out. You can go into a gym and workout right but are you consciously aware of strengthening other aspects of your life? There should be an overall higher purpose instead of just 'gains'. Bodybuilding doesn't really encourage it, plus steroids. That's why I started going the fitness route. It's more inline with who I am.
And it's not just about the visual representation when you stand in front of the mirror.
It's about valuing your life...
...your only body's health, developing a positive mental state, and building character. You must have a high level of self-worth to consistently adhere to a physical activity program. Why wouldn't you want to see what your capable of? And then you can see just how great you feel too. Your body was built to be worked like this. Okay, this ideal is all relative to the individual though and I understand that. You must realize so much of our environment is toxic. You must have a rebellious nature in yourself. Going against popular opinion and choosing the narrow path is not easy. I was naïve when I first started and thought I could have it a little bit of both but now I understand.. The food, the convenience of modern life creating sedentary lives, the propagandist media. It's all going against you. Also, these are just somethings I've identified and I'm sure many others acknowledge. I'm not claiming to be a saint here but we can all do things to minimize the bad stuff. So now that we accept a healthier lifestyle we need to...
'branch out'...
Why keep all that knowledge to yourself? Inspire your family and friends by actively engaging them. Become a leader by BECOMING IT, you must be the embodiment for others to believe. You'll enrich your life, your family, and possibly even your community. It starts spreading. Take it to the gym by becoming a certified personal trainer. That's one thing I've been working on achieving lately. I've got the study material now all I got to do is chip away at it, little by little and then take a test to receive certification. I've already learned a lot but I hope to practice it one day so I can help others on a journey towards betterment achieve their goals. If you need help getting in the gym grab a buddy. Don't go it alone. Or maybe talk with a personal trainer for help getting on the fast track.
