4 REASONS TO RETHINK FACEBOOK USAGE
Starting the process of cutting the fat from your life by becoming more disciplined with Facebook and social media.
1. Gain more free time...
This is one of the main problems with social media, even in moderation. How many times have you logged into Facebook, start scrolling down your newsfeed and then get put into a mental trance? Can't remember? Well, that's because it happens so easily without realizing. Facebook time distortion is real. Ten minutes or so of what you intended on being a quick check of the newsfeed turns into an hour after liking pictures, witnessing other people's live, and thinking of comments. Could this time be used for something more important? Could this mental preoccupation with Facebook be put forth to planning out your next move more efficiently so you have less stress and maybe more time in the back?
2. Regain some of your privacy...
Sometimes we post more information than we should. The private information we post onto the Internet can literally be seen by anyone. Future employers, college professors, your boss at work. Yes, the page it resides on can be deleted but according to experiments done on Facebook the data continues to remain with the servers. Those with information technology expertise such as hackers know how to retrieve this data. Control what you post and this shouldn't be a problem though. Remember Facebook has been shady with its users by changing its privacy policy countless times. Facebook also mines data from its users and then sells it. Companies buy this data to build profiles on potential customers resulting in you getting more ads. Do you really want all that extra junk?
3. By becoming more private you get closer with those in your circle...
Now that I stopped posting status updates and pictures frequently it has forced me into sharing it with others in a different form. You shouldn't post your whole life. I don't want to sever all means of contact with my friends so I still have the messenger. Video chat services such as Skype is also a good option. I have to be more personal now because I don't have the option of just throwing crap out into the feed. This one-on-one approach is more inclusive instead of mass-projection that comes from posting. It gives you a feeling of closeness and breaks down the walls of isolation maybe someone else was experiencing.
4. Preserve relationships and gain new friends in real life...
You can get closer in your relationship by being exclusive to your significant other. Studies have been done indicating Facebook users in a relationship can have issues with jealousy. Someone will get more or less attention and the other feels jealousy leading to hostility. Another loss of exclusiveness caused by Facebook is the selfies. For example, take someone in a relationship who commonly posts selfies. Suddenly your value to the other person drops because you shared that valued image with the world instead of the person that is supposed to mean the world to you. If you really have to, send that selfie to your significant other instead.
